My limestone bobcat was something of a performance project.
It started with an 800# block of Indiana Limestone, delivered to the botom of our driveway in Brevard, NC and perched on a natural boulder.
But it is the following weekend before I can start making dust.
Since I am working in the open, the weather dictates my progress and it will be a long time before people can tell what I am doing (I don’t tell.)
He is carved to fit the boulder, so at one point, I have to hoist him up and shift the stone back.
Slowly, a figure emerges and people in the community begin to place bets on what the final animal will be – bear was the most common guess.
Had to hoist him up again to work under the belly and around the legs and face.
And the face was kind of a giveaway.
Finally he stood sentinal at the base of the driveway, anchored to the boulder by gravity and those big cat feet gripping the edge.
He’s well traveled for a piece of rock. We moved him to the back of the property (top photo) when we put our house on the market and then took him with us to Texas where he was sold.
